For this Tuesday’s Tech Tip, we will walk you through how you can put your custom GoDaddy domain name to use.
You have a domain with GoDaddy you would like to be associated with your website, but how can you do this? Check out the information below for a guide on different ways you can change your new website URL to point to the right place. Remember if you need additional help, you can always contact GoDaddy support to walk you through any of these methods.
Accessing your Domain Details
- Once you have logged in, find “Domains” on the list of options (should be at the top) and click the “Launch” button.
- Select your Domain from the list of Domains on your account (can also search in the top left).
Once you have accessed your “Domain details” page, there are a few options available to you:
Editing your “A” record:
- From the main domain details page, click the “DNS Zone File” tab.
- Hover over your “A” record and click the “edit record” button See Screenshot.
- In the popup screen, you have three fields:
- Host: Leave default “@” to point directly to your domain or enter host name the “A” record is linked to.
- Points to: This is where you enter the IP address of where the record’s domain (or subdomain) resolves.
- TTYL: Leave this at the default value.
Changing your Nameservers:
- From the main domain details page, click the “Settings” tab (if you’re not already there).
- The third item down reads “Nameservers”, then click “Manage”.
- Here you have two options:
- Standard: If you do not have custom nameservers, nothing needs to be changed. This is the default.
- Custom: This is where you would enter custom nameservers if you have any instead of using GoDaddy’s default nameservers. Usually if you have a website hosted somewhere, your hosting provider will have the nameservers for you to set here. The nameservers are usually listed in your hosting account details or in the cPanel of your hosting account, but if you need help finding them just contact your hosting provider’s support team.
Forwarding (with or without masking)
Forwarding allows you to direct visitor’s to a different website than the one they entered in. This can be done with or without masking. If you enable masking, this will hide the new domain (the one directed to) from the user and only show the domain they originally entered.
